According to Pottermore Insider, they’re going to put up Clue 3 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm BST (which is 4:00 am to 8:00 am EST).  I slept through Clue 2 last night.  If I’m awake for Clue 3, I’ll try to help out.

Pottermore Day 3: Prisoner of Azkaban Hints/Tips (Ch 1-4, some of 5)

Hey, guys!  So, I’m going through PoA and posting hints/tips for Day 3 of Pottermore (chapter summaries and stuff with numbers).

I’ll be editing this post, adding more information as I find it.

(I’ll be sending the list to http://pottermorewatch.tumblr.com, as that seems to be the many people are using as a resource.  So far, I’ve submitted chapters 1-4 to PottermoreWatch.)

Chapter 1:  Owl Post

Summary:  Harry’s writing an essay.  He looks at the clock in the middle of the night and notices it’s his birthday.  Owls show up with presents for him.

Hints/Stuff with Numbers:

The topic of Harry’s essay is “Witch Burning in the Fourteenth Century Was Completely Pointless-dicuss”

Wendelin the Weird allowed herself to be caught 47 times

The Dursleys locked Harry’s spellbooks, wand, cauldron, and broomstick in the cupboard under the stairs

Harry’s thinks Snape would be delighted to give him detention for a month.

Harry picked the lock on the cupboard in the first week of the holidays.

Harry had had no word from his friends for 5 weeks

Harry puts away his essay at 1:00 am.  He looks at the lock and notices it’s his birthday, so it’s 31 July 1993.  It’s his 13^th birthday.

Durselys ignored Harry’s last 2 birthdays

Hedwig had been absent for 2 nights.

Harry had grown a few inches

Dursleys had pretended for 10 years that Harry got his scar in a car crash

Volemort is the most feared Dark Wizard for a hundred years

3 owls came through Harry’s window:  Hedwig, Errol, and a Hogwarts Owl. They have packages are from Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid with birthday presents.  Harry also gets the official letter from Hogwarts about starting term.

Harry gets his first ever birthday card

Arthur Weasley won the Annual Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw.  Ron later tells Harry in his letter it was 700 Galleons

Weasleys visit Egypt for 1 month

5 Weasley kids currently attend Hogwarts

All 9 Weasleys are in the photo that Ron sends to Harry, plus Scabbers.

Molly Weasley woudn’t let Ginny into the last tomb the family visited.

Ron tells Harry some of the skeletons had extra heads.

Most of the money is going to the trip, but Ron will get a new wand

Weasleys will be back home about a week before term starts

Percy got his Head Boy letter last week (so, that would be the week before Ron wrote the letter to Harry)

Percy is in 7^th year in this book

Ron gives Harry a Pocket Sneakoscope for his birthday.  Ron’s package has a letter, the gift, and the newspaper clipping about his family.

Hermione sends Harry a card, letter, and present.

Hermione’s present is the Broomstick Servicing Kit.  It’s in a black leather case with silver words stamped across it

Inside the Kit, there are 4 items.  (1) a large jar of Fleetwood’s High-Finish Handle Polish, (2) a pair of gleaming silver Tail-Twig Clippers, (3) a tiny brass compass to clip on your broom for long journeys, and (4) Handbook of Do-It-Yourself Broomcare.

Harry is the youngest House player in a century

Harry looks at the clock again. 

It is 2:00 am, so about 1 hour has passed since he looked at the clock last time.

Chapter 2:  Aunt Marge’s Big Mistake

Summary:  Aunt Marge comes to visit the Dursleys.  She insults Harry.  Harry causes her to blow up like a balloon.  Harry leaves 4 Privet Drive

Hints/Stuff with Numbers:

Vernon Dursley says that Marge’s train gets in at 10

Aunt Marge visited for Dudley’s 5^th birthday.  She whacked Harry to stop him from beating Dudley at musical chairs.

A few years later, she visited at Christmas.  She gave Dudley a robot and gave Harry dog biscuits.

Marge’s last visit (prior to the visit in POA) was in the year before Harry started Hogwarts

During the last visit, Marge’s dog Ripper chased Harry up a tree and she didn’t call him down until past midnight.

Vernon says Mage will be there for a week.

Vernon gives 3 warnings to Harry before leaving to pick up Marge from the train station: (1) Keep a civil tongue, (2) No funny stuff, (3) They told her Harry goes to St. Brutus’s Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys

Harry sends Errol and Hedwig to Ron, with a note asking him to look after Hedwig because of Marge’s visit

Dudley is paid to put up with Marge’s hugs.  He gets a 20 pound note.

Marge says:  a good thrashing is what’s needed in 99 cases out of a hundred

Harry got through the next 3 days by thinking of the Handbook

Dudley was eating his 4^th slice of pie

Marge has 12 dogs

Harry remembers page 12 of the Handbook, A Charm to Cure Reluctant Reversers

By my count, Marge gets about 4 glasses of brandy.  (Vernon pours 1 for her; then she’s insulting Harry and says “yes, I’ll have a spot more brandy”; she continues insulting Harry and pours more brandy in her glass, splashing it on the tablecloth as well; then Vernon tells her Harry’s dad was unemployed and Harry says he wasn’t, so Vernon tries to distract Marge by emptying the bottle into her glass)

Chapter 3:  The Knight Bus

Summary:  Harry runs away from 4 Privet Drive and gets on the Knight Bus, where he reads an article about Sirius Black escaping from Azkaban.  Harry goes to Diagon Alley and speaks with Minister of Magic Fudge.

Hints/Stuff with Numbers:

Harry was alone in the street for 10 minutes before he started to panic.

Harry hears something, so he uses Lumos to light his wand, and the light from his wand hits the wall of number 2, making it sparkle

Harry sees something with a large outline with big eyes between the house and garage.  (We later find out it was Sirius)

A gigantic pair of wheels screeched to a halt where Harry had been

Triple-decker Knight bus

Harry thinks Stan Shunpike is only a few years older than him, maybe 18 or 19 at most

Harry tells Stan he’s Neville

Cost of taking the Knight bus is 11 Sickles regular fair, 14 if you want hot chocolate, and 15 if you want a hot water bottle and a toothbrush in the color of your choice (Remember 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles = 493 Knuts)

Harry sees that there are half a dozen (6) beds on the Knight Bus (I think this is just on one level of the bus, though, right?)

The Knight Bus has 1 conductor and 1 driver.  They each have an armchair on the bus.

Ern tells Stan to get Madam Marsh, because they’ll be in Abergaveny in a minute

When Ern stamps on the brake, the beds slide a foot (12 inches) or so toward the front of the bus.  (I have the US edition.  1 inch = 2.54 cm.  So, 12 inches = 30.48 cm.)

The Knight bus was jumping 100 miles at a time

The Daily Prophet says Sirius murdered 13 people (12 muggles and 1 wizard) with 1 curse and that this happened 12 years ago.

Stan says Sirius is the first person to ever break out of Azkaban (but we find out in a later book that Bartemius Crouch Jr. was able to get out by switching places with his mother).

Harry remembers that Hagrid spent 2 months in Azkaban last year

Harry had paid for hot chocolate, so he must have paid 14 Sickles

Harry was the last passenger left on the bus

While Harry and Fudge are talking, Tom brings in a tray with 2 items (tea and crumpets).

When talking to Fudge, Harry still has 2 more weeks left in summer vacation

Fudge takes 2 crumpets

Harry stays at The Leaky Caldron, in Room number 11

Tom says that Hedwig arrived at The Leaky Cauldron about 5 minutes after Harry did

Chapter 4:  The Leaky Cauldron

Summary:  Harry spends the end of his vacation at The Leaky Caldron.  He meets up with the Weasleys and Hermione.  Harry overhears Mr. and Mrs. Weasley talking.  People think that Sirius escaped from Azkaban to murder Harry.

Hints/Stuff with Numbers:

Florean Fortescue gave Harry free sundaes every half hour

The new broom The Firebolt was displayd in Quality Quidditch supplies 1 week after Harry arrived at The Leaky Cauldron

Irish International ordered 7 Firebolts, according to the person at the shop

The Firebolt’s acceleration is 150 miles/hour in 10 seconds (150 miles/hour = about 241.4 km/hour)

Harry is taking 2 new classes this year:  Care of Magical Creatures and Divination

The cage in the bookshop had about 100 copies of The Monster Book of Monsters

The manager of the bookshop says he’d been bitten by the Monster Books 5 times that morning

Two Monster Books tear a third apart

The manager tells Harry that they ordered 200 copies of the Invisible Book of Invisibility but couldn’t find them.

Harry buys 3 books (that are named) from the bookshop:  (1)Unfogging the Future, (2) Intermediate Transfiguration, and (3) Standard Book of Spells Grade 3.  He does not need to buy the Monster Book since Hagrid gave it to him as a present

Harry sees 3 Gryffindors from his year: Dean and Seamus in Quality Quidditch Supplies, and Neville outside Flourish and Blotts with his grandmother

Harry meets Ron and Hermione on the last day of summer vacation (so it must be 31 August 1993).  They are staying the night at the Leaky Caldron

Ron’s new want is 14 inches

Hermione has 3 bags, because she’s taking more subjects

Hermione lists 5 classes she’s taking before Ron interrupts: (1) Arithmancy, (2) Care of Magical Creatures, (3) Divination, (4) Study of Ancient Runes, (5) Muggle Studies

Hermione has 10 Galleons left after they are don’t with school shopping

The witch in Magical Menagerie says that a common garden rat usually doesn’t live more than 3 years

It takes Harry and Ron 10 minutes to find Scabbers

Mrs. Weasley comes into The Leaky Caldron with 4 of her kids: twins, Ginny, Percy

Fred and George are in their 5^th year in this book

Percy’s the 2^nd Head Boy in the family

9 people (the 7 Weasleys plus Harry and Hermione) have a 5 course dinner on 3 tables

When Harry hears Mr. and Mrs. Weasley arguing, Mr. Weasley says it has been 3 weeks since anyone’s seen Sirius (so that’s 3 weeks back from 31 August 1993)

The Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione will have 2 Ministry cars taking them to King’s Cross

Harry is upset that everyone will be watching him, because he won’t be able to go to Hogsmeade, and he remembers that he’d escaped Voldemort 3 times so far

Chapter 5:  The Dementor

Summary: The Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione go to King’s Cross.  The kids are on the train and a dementor comes in. They meet Professor Lupin.

Hints/Stuff with Numbers (partial list):

As the Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione are about to leave The Leaky Cauldron,there are 4 pets with them:  (1) Hedwig, (2) Hermes, (3) Crookshanks, and (4) Scabbers—-3 actual pets and 1 Animagus

They reached King’s Cross with 20 minutes to spare

They go through the barrier in pairs, Harry with Mr. Weasley; Percy and Ginny

The InterCity 125 arrived at platform 9

Mrs. Weasley kissed all her kids (5) plus Harry and Hermione (so total of 7 kids).  She gave Harry an extra hug.

All compartments are full except for the last one, which has one person in it (Lupin)

Lupin’s case is stamped with “Professor R. J. Lupin”.  Professor R. J. Lupin = 16 letters; R. J. Lupin = 7 letters
